Small town, big trees, Ohio River, playground fun, walk everywhere, swimming pool, City Park, Nelson Field, Gulla’s Hot Dog, Imperial Glass, Dicarlo’s Pizza, riding the bus to Wheeling and South Bellaire Methodist Church. The skating rink and the movie theater.
Just some of the places and memories I have growing up in small town Ohio.
I moved 2000 miles away many years ago. I visit almost every year and the last few visits I see my childhood home differently. Maybe I’m more sentimental as I get older.
I see so many good times, growing up in a small town. I see the beautiful huge trees everywhere. I see the Bellaire Bridge that we marched to with my Dad, from the park, as he tossed the wreath off into the river, in memory of our Veterans. I see the spectacular Bellaire High School, still in excellent condition with so many memories inside. I see the park fountain and Memorial monuments. I see my grade school. I see my house, boarded up and run down. It’s sad to see it that way on the outside, but I’m thankful for the memories I have inside that home.
Yes, I have wonderful memories of my Bellaire, my Rose Hill neighborhood and grade school friends at West Bellaire, Gravel Hill, First Ward and Indian Run.
This picture is the view from my childhood bedroom. I probably didn’t think much of it then but as I look at this picture now I feel privileged that I grew up in good ole Bellaire, Ohio. It’s not the same but no place stays the same. And that’s OK. I’m sure the kids growing up there today are making wonderful memories they will look back on someday too.
Did you grow up in a small town? What childhood memories do you have?
