The Secret to Hummingbird Cake is about three, very close bonded girlfriends, living in Louisiana. They are 30 and have been friends since grade school. I picked this novel to review because I love hummingbirds and especially hummingbird cake. And I wanted to find out the secret. I was surprised, and delighted, to find out what it was. I loved their friendship and how they supported, encouraged and took care of each other. One of the gals occasionally made a yummy hummingbird cake and the others wondered what made it so good. She would never tell them. Since the back of the cover doesn’t say much about what this book is about, I won’t give away spoilers. It was a wonderful book to read. It was a little slow until about 1/3 way through. I laughed out loud several times, it brought a tear to my eye other times and I wanted to choke a character or two at times.
A very heartwarming story that is funny, happy and sad. The author accurately includes aspects of life that matter; love, marriage, friendships, and faith. It’s very enjoyable and easy to read. I recommend it to any gal who enjoys a good chick book. There are some Christian references but not a heavy spiritual read.
