Rhythms of Rest
Finding the Spirit of Sabbath in a Busy World
by Shelly Miller
Life is busy. How do we find time to rest? Seems impossible, doesn’t it? Shelly has written a book to help us learn how to and the benefits of Sabbath. She helped me realize how my creative juices can flow from times of rest. When we rest in quietness we can hear God more clearly and see from his perspective. I’m so excited about this! God is creative and has made us creative. Our creativeness tends to get smothered in the busyness of life. When we pause we are better able to reflect on our purpose.
“Sabbath is the exhale required after six days of inhaling our work.”
“Shabbat is a Hebrew word used for Sabbath, which means “to cease.” We must cease in order to rest.”
The book includes examples from others of how they observe the Sabbath. It can be as simple as taking a prayer walk, or lounging in your pj’s a while longer, enjoying a cup of tea. My favorite is spending time journaling or reading a good book. Limiting or ceasing from Internet is another great idea. There is a rhythm to rest. It’s about being in God’s presence.
“What brings your joy and peace and closer to God?”
The Sabbath is about spending time with God, not a strict list of ‘things to do or things not to do’ on Sabbath.
“Sabbath is a weekly dinner date with Jesus, a time set apart when we give him our undivided attention.”
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28-30 MSG
Sabbath is not something we earn but a free gift we choose.
There are no set rules and your resting Sabbath will be different than mine.
This book will be released October 4, 2016. I am honored to be on the launch team and received a manuscrupit copy. I have ordered the book too and cannot wait to read again and delve more deeply into learning how to establish more time with God.
I would recommend this book to all who need to rest. That’s everyone, isn’t it?
Thanks for reading. Please share your thoughts on this. I love hearing from you!
