Book Review – Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver
There are numerous sermons and teachings about Mary and Martha. I’ve often wondered how Martha felt. She was the busy one but I think she longed to sit at Jesus’ feet like Mary. This book, Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World, takes a look at the life of Mary and Martha in a way that I felt like I was there. Joanna is a great storyteller. The subtitle is Finding Intimacy with God in the Busyness of Life. Joanna does a great job of telling us how to be still, and find this closeness with our Lord. He wants time with us and we need time with Him. At no additional cost to you, if you choose to purchase from Amazon through my affiliate link in this post, I may receive a small commission.
I like that she included the Salvation Prayer at the end of Chapter 1. The book is filled with Scripture. I received a lot of practical yet challenging advice. She covers topics such as worry, anxiety, the 3 deadly D’s, and balancing time with the Lord and serving Him. My book is highlighted, underlined and marked with post-it notes. I will refer to it again and again.
There is a 12-week Bible study included for individuals or group.
I was very blessed reading this book. I would recommend to any woman who longs to spend intimate time with her Lord, yet cannot seem to find that time. I love chapter 5, Living Room Intimacy and chapter 6, Kitchen Service. So much wisdom in these pages!

Hi there, Barbara. I read this book two years ago and loved it! One thing I especially appreciated is that she is not exalting Mary over Martha. She makes the point that they are different personalities, but that both can seek intimacy with Jesus. We usually tend to think of Martha as the less spiritual one. 🙂
Hi Betsy, Thank you for your comment and stopping by. I like what you said. That is a wonderful point about the different personalities of these two women. I love serving so I relate so much to Martha. Blessings to you.
