“God doesn’t call the qualified. He qualifies the called.” ~ Pastor Mark Batterson.
Why does God call us to do something we are not qualified for? That’s what I’ve been asking Him lately. Moses is a good example of feeling unqualified for what God asked him to do. In Exodus 3, Moses is minding his own business while tending the flock of his father-in-law Jethro. He comes upon a burning bush and from this bush, God speaks to Moses. First, God tells him to take off his sandals because he is standing on holy ground. (Exodus 3:5)
Now if I were Moses and I knew it was God speaking to me from a burning bush, I think I would believe anything God said and do whatever He told me to do. Wouldn’t you?
In Exodus 3, God says to Moses that He sees the suffering of the children of Israel, and heard their cries. He wants Moses to go to Pharaoh about releasing the children of Israel out of their suffering in Egypt. Moses has 5 excuses:
Excuse 1: I’m not qualified. “But why me? What makes you think that I could ever go to Pharaoh and lead the People of Israel out of Egypt.” Exodus 3:11
Excuse 2: I don’t know what to say. “What do I tell them?” Exodus 3:13
Excuse 3: The won’t believe me. “They won’t trust me. They won’t listen to a word I say. They’re going to say, ‘God? Appear to him? Hardly!’” Exodus 4:1
Excuse 4: I’m not a good speaker. “Master, please, I don’t talk well. I’ve never been good with words, neither before nor after you spoke to me. I stutter and stammer.” Exodus 4:10
Excuse 5: I don’t want to. “Oh, Master, please! Send somebody else! Exodus 4:13
What excuses do you give God about the thing He has called you to? I’ve used the same ones as Moses and more. There is always a lesson to be learned from the men and women of the Bible. Moses did finally obey God. You can read the entire account of Moses in Exodus.
Maybe God has called you to write a book or start a blog. Or teach a Bible study or witness to a friend. Maybe it’s a job or business related. Whatever that tug on your heart is that you believe God is wanting you to do, step out in faith and trust Him to give you the words, the confidence, the determination to fulfill His plan and purpose in your life.
We don’t need to be qualified for something God is calling us to do. We just need to be willing. He will give you the tools you need, the words to speak, and the confidence. The requirement is having the faith that God will equip you and trust that it’s His plan for you.
Remember: “God doesn’t call the qualified. He qualifies the called.” ~ Pastor Mark Batterson.
He uses our weaknesses so that His power is seen and that we will learn to depend on Him.
Has God asked something of you that you were unqualified for but you stepped out in faith and did it?
