Words are powerful! We know that from experience. Unfortunately, from negative experiences we know this. Words are also powerful when used in a positive way.
The Bible tells us our tongue can bring life or death. Proverbs 18:21
Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose. The Message Bible
This book, Breaking the Power of Negative Words, is for anyone who has been hurt by someone’s words, used words to hurt others and those who want freedom from both. The author says her intention in writing this book is to “take us beyond the words and offer steps that can help remove the harmful effects and place us on a pathway to healing and freedom.”
There is hope for our healing from words.
Part 1 Words spoken to us Part 2 Words we speak to ourselves Part 3 Words we speak to others
Mary does a great job of sharing examples that we can all relate to. She has done extensive research on the subject. At the end of each chapter there are “It’s Your Turn” questions to reflect on and help us break free from the power negative words have had. Break free from playing a victim. Break free from offenses.
I learned a lot from this book, especially about the power of positive words. Also insightful was how negative words spoken to us are not usually about us. Their words are from their brokenness. Chapter 3, Choosing to Forgive, helped me to understand the process of forgiving someone, using the 5 Ws and H; Who, What, Where, When, Why, How
Some of my favorite quotes from the book are:
“It’s only by understanding how we are forgiven that we can forgive.”
“If someone else’s words tear you down, use your own words to build yourself up!”
“Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Luke 6:45
“Nothing positive comes from negativity”
“Develop an attitude of gratitude!”
“Just as you need to protect yourself from the words of others, you may need to protect yourself from your own words.”
I want to be more mindful of the words I speak and write, mindful to be positive by speaking words of love, life and hope. Don’t you? Then get yourself a copy. I highly recommend it.
